The National Bee Unit has recently published warnings on starvation and high varroa mite levels in colonies observed during the course of hive inspections. Beekeepers are advised to check levels of stores, especially in colonies where honey has been removed by the beekeeper, and commence supplementary feeding if necessary. Varroa mite levels should be monitored according to NBU advice, and treatment used if levels are of concern.
