NBKA vice-chair Trevor Nash gave a presentation about wax and solar extraction for the first event on the 2018 calendar. He started by going through the benefits of solar extraction, before moving on to properties of beeswax, including the range of melting point, and factors that affect the quality of the extracted product. Photos of several different home-made extractors were shown, and Trevor also brought along one of his extractors (the more portable of the two!) to give a more tactile example.
The audience was treated to a video of wax foundation being made using a simple silicone press, including the melting of support wires into the foundation when mounting into a frame. It was pointed out that although savings can be made if producing foundation oneself, the process is extremely time-consuming.
