Of particular interest at this time of year is why some colonies are slow to build up, and an infection of nosema can be a cause. With a view to mapping the presence of nosema apis and nosema ceranae in Norfolk, Ian Watkinson, together with Venetia Rist and Paul Metcalf, tested sample of bees from the apiaries of several members.

Attendees were shown how to prepare samples for viewing on a microscope, and several instances of nosema were found, as well as several samples with no nosema present. There was lively discussion about the symptoms of an infection, the method of transmission, and also possibilities for treatment.

Thanks to Ian, Venetia and Paul for running the session, and to those who attended and brought samples of bees for testing.
